    Rape convict escapes from Vellore jail

    A convict in a rape case escaped from the Vellore central jail on Wednesday afternoon. The Bagayam police said that jail officials were yet to file a complaint about the incident which occurred around 12 noon.

    Police said that Ramesh (38) of Thenmadimangalam in Kalasapakkam panchayat union in Tiruvannamalai district, was convicted in a rape case three years ago and was awarded a 10-year jail sentence.


    Ramesh had completed two and a half years in jail and was a good conduct prisoner.


    He was allowed to work outside the prison in the jail garden. Sources revealed that he had reported for gardening work in the morning but went missing during the roll call and did not re-enter the prison on Wednesday afternoon.


    Jail officials refused to comment on the incident and police were waiting for a complaint to be filed in order to register a case.
