The opposition Congress demanded permission to discuss the remarks made by the Chief Minister against Rahul Gandhi’s campaign in Karnataka welcoming the demand for Mekedatu dam.

Congress legislature party leader KR Ramasamy during zero hours insisted permission to raise the issue and wanted the ‘controversial remark’ against their leader removed from the Assembly proceedings. But, Speaker P Dhanapal refused permission. Protesting against the Speaker, the Congress members, led by Ramasamy staged a walkout.

“On July 1, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami pointed out that Rahul Gandhi during the recent Lok Sabha election campaign in Karnataka said that if Congress was voted to power, it will allow Karnataka to construct the Mekedatu dam,” Congress MLA JG Prince told reporters.

The CM also quoted Rahul and said that the Congress leader wanted to disband the Cauvery Management Board. “The Chief Minister questioned our party’s silence on this, but when we cross-checked with our party headquarters, the CM comment has turned out to be factually wrong. Palaniswami has recorded politically motivated baseless allegation against our leader. We want the Speaker to remove the allegations on our leader from the Assembly proceedings. Our plea was turned down by the Speaker, hence the walkout,” Prince added.
