Around 50 residents from the SL refugee camps across the district, who arrived in Tiruchy collectorate, said that they have been living in India for over three decades after the civil war broke out in the island nation. In order to escape, the Tamil speaking residents landed in Tamil Nadu and registered themselves as refugees, and were leading a meek life in the camps under the watchful eyes of the Tamil Nadu police, they said.
They claimed that their children who were born in India were also denied of proper employment and the technical education. “Our children who have no connection with Sri Lanka are denied employment citing reasons that they are ‘refugees’. The government should remove the refugee tag so that they lead a decent life with proper employment,” they said.
After submitting the petition, they told the reporters that they should be given dual citizenship like people in other countries.
