Nanguneri Assembly seat fell vacant after sitting Congress MLA H Vasantha Kumar resigned following his election to the Lok Sabha from Kanniyakumari.
Talking to reporters here, Thirunavukkarasar said since Congress has already won in Nanguneri, there were chances for the party to contest in the by-election too.
But, however, if Udhayanidhi wants to contest in Nanguneri and the DMK high command gives him a chance, the Congress will definitely support him.
Though the DMK has not yet demanded Nanguneri seat from its ally Congress, Thirunavukkarasar made the announcement following reports that the DMK was keen on contesting from Nanguneri seat.
Thirunavukkarasar, who is Member of Parliament from Tiruchy said, he had not stated that his victory from Tiruchy Lok Sabha seat was due to his own popularity in the constituency. “The role of DMK leaders and cadre in my victory was huge,” he said.
His explanation came after reports quoting Thirunavukkarasar of saying his victory was based on his own popularity irked its ally the DMK.
Following this, former minister and Tiruchy district DMK secretary KN Nehru, recently questioned ‘how long the DMK could lift palanquin for Congress in Tamil Nadu,’ and DMK should contest alone in the local bodies elections.
Thirunavukkarasar further said he wish that the victorious alliance (DMK-Congress) should continue in the local body and Assembly elections to make Stalin the Chief Minister of the state. It is the wish of the Congress party also, he added.
