Hundreds of farmers block road in Tirupur over stray dog menace

Alleging that hundreds of goats had died in the attack by stray dogs, the irate farmers urged the local authorities to take measures to control the animal menace.

On June 24, a large number of farmers had gheraoed the Dharapuram Sub-Collector’s office demanding to cull stray dogs after several of their goats reportedly fell prey to them. Meanwhile, on Thursday night, a pack of ten dogs reportedly killed as many as 22 goats reared by Rajendran at his farm in Kallipalayam village.

The dogs also killed four more dogs in the same neighbourhood during daytime.

The farmers, who grew upset over the incident, began to chase and attack stray dogs with weapons on Friday.

At least six dogs, which ran into a dumpyard, were then killed by the farmers.

The farmers then expressed anguish that their goats could have been saved if the officials had acted in time.

Subsequently, more than 200 farmers then blocked the Dharapuram-Tirupur road.

They then withdrew the protest after holding traffic for over an hour-and-a-half following assurance by municipality officials to take measures to end stray dog menace.
