May 22 firing: CBI told to submit report on September 15

Though the CBI sought more time to complete the investigation, the court asked the agency to submit the report of inquiry conducted so far on September 15.

R Ravi, Deputy Superintendent of CBI, submitted a petition before the Division Bench of Justices M Sathyanarayanan and B Pugalendhi. After the case was shifted to the CBI, the court ordered the central agency to complete the probe within six months.

While the Thoothukudi police had filed 222 cases in connection with the incidents, all them were merged into a single case for investigation by the CB-CID. Later, the CBI was ordered to probe all the cases and a First Information Report was filed on October 8, last year.

As of now, the CBI has sent 160 technical evidence for examination and among these, response has been received for hundred items. Besides, 300 persons have been inquired by the investigation team and as many as 316 documents pertaining to investigation had been collected, the petitioner claimed. Stating that it needs more time to collate further evidence, the CBI asked for an extension to complete the investigation.

However, Justice Kannan said that the six-month period set by the court has already expired and additional time could not be granted.

Following this, the bench asked the CBI to submit the report of the inquiry conducted so far on September 15 and adjourned the case.
