Edappadi to launch desalination plant in TN

Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami will visit Nemmeli tomorrow to inaugurate the sea water desalination project in the state.

The Tamil Nadu Government has given priority to implement the seawater desalination projects to cater Chennai's drinking water needs. Desalination project worth up to Rs 1140 crore is already been functioning in Chennai, to cater the needs of North and South part of the city. About 100 litres of drinking water is generated per day in a desalination plant in Kaattupalli in Meenjur, Thiruvallur district, which is being distributed to North Chennai.

Another Desalination plant, launched 8 years ago in Nemmeli, East Coast Road generates 100 million litres of water, of which around 80 million litres of water is supplied to Thiruvanmiyur, Velachery and Sholinganallur areas in South Chennai.  

An additional desalination project is to be proposed and implemented at Nemmeli at a cost of Rs 1,250 crore, as per the orders of Chief Minister. This project is expected to generate 150 million litres of drinking water.

An MoU has been signed with a german based company named KFW  to fund the project. Accordingly,  Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami will visit Nemmeli on Thursday and lay the groundwork for the 3 rd desalination project in the state.

Officials said  more desalination plants are to be installed to generate 800 million litres of drinking water daily to cater the needs of the people of Chennai.
