In a suspected case of honour killing, a 22-year-old youth was reportedly hacked to death by his own brother, while his girl friend is battling for life in a hospital after sustaining injuries in the attack in the outskirts of Coimbatore on Tuesday.

According to the police, Kanagaraj (22), a labourer, and his sixteen-year-old girl friend had moved into a rented house and began to live together over the last few days.
As the girl hails from a backward community Kanagaraj’s family members-who were of a different caste-were opposed to the love affair.
“Three days ago, the girl visited Kanagaraj’s residence to live with him. As his family opposed, he walked out with her to live in a rented house in the same neighbourhood,” the police said.
On Tuesday around 5.20 pm, Kanagaraj’s elder brother Vinod (25) visited his house and picked up a quarrel over the issue.
“Unexpectedly, he took out a sickle and hacked Kanagaraj to death on the spot. He also attacked the girl who tried to save her boy friend,” the police said.
Vinod, who too works as a labourer, fled the scene after attacking the girl and the youth.
Upon hearing screams, neighbours rushed into the house and took the girl, who bore severe cut injuries on her head and face, to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) for treatment.
On receiving information, the Mettupalayam police rushed to the spot and held inquiries at the scene of crime.
The body of the deceased had been sent for post mortem at Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital .
A case has been registered and a search is on to nab the culprits involved in the murderous attack.
