The examination was held between May 15 and 26 and the professor, R Muthaiyan (56), was appointed invigilator of a Ramanathapuram centre. While more than 200 students appeared for it, Muthaiyan reportedly demanded Rs 5,000 from each of the students and in return they could copy the answers. However, the students refused to pay the money. Failing to coax them to pay up, Muthaiyan reportedly behaved disrespectfully with them as well, sources said.
The students and the distance education administration sent a complaint to Vice Chancellor Balasubramanian who formed an enquiry committee to look into the incident. The committee report, in its findings, said that not just this one incident, Muthaiyan had also been involved in several other irregularities and on Thursday evening, the VC issued a suspension order to professor Muthaiyan. “Further inquiry is on,” the VC added.
Sources said that this is the first incident of its kind in the history of the four-decade old university that a professor has been suspended based on such a complaint.
