Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Duraimurugan along with 6 MLAs handed over a petition to Collector SA Raman on Friday demanding action on a war-footing to resolve the acute drinking water scarcity in the district.
Vellore
Talking to reporters after meeting the collector here, he alleged that the rampant sand mining in the Palar river was the reason for the present problem.
Though the Collector claimed that permission was not given for sand quarrying, the police were doing so on the sly, charged Duraimurugan.
Elaborating on the impact of water crisis, he recalled that when DMK men went to thank the voters, people confronted the party functionaries and cadre with empty pots seeking drinking water.
The DMK leader threatened that his party would be forced to protest along with the people if the collector failed to conduct a meeting of peoples’representatives, officials and minister within a week.
He complained that the village panchayat authorities usingfunds to buy trash cans and not for deepening the existing borewell or to sink fresh borewells.
He said that officials should change their attitude and go to people if they wanted to understand such problems instead of sitting in AC offices. MLAs who accompanied Duraimurugan include P Karthikeyan (Vellore), AP Nandakumar (Anaicut), JL Eswarappan (Arcot), R Gandhi (Ranipet), S Kathavarayan (Gudiyattam) and Nallathambi (Tirupattur).
