Public hearing to decide fate of Nadupattu

Government officials from Chennai would soon be conducting a public hearing to resolve a 61-year-old anomaly at Nadupattu village where streets fall under different panchayat unions and assembly constituencies.

The public hearing would be based on the question of making Nadupattu, a separate village panchayat along with bringing it under the Arni west panchayat union jurisdiction.

The district level public hearing conducted by Collector KS Kandasamy two days ago gained momentum and the villagers demanded to declare Nadupattu as a separate village panchayat. Speaking to DT Next Kandasamy said, “The anomaly resulted in the village being ignored while funds were being disbursed for various government schemes.”

Explaining the incongruity, the locals said, “Our village is part of Vinnamangalam and Konaiyur village panchayats and comes under the Pernamallur and Arni west panchayat unions respectively. When government schemes are announced, only Vinnamangalam receives the benefits while Nadupattu is left out.” The locals were irked as three streets in Nadupattu fall under Konaiyur and another two streets come under Vinnamangalam village panchayat. They alleged that no action has been taken on our issue so far despite their repeated pleas in the past six decades.

As a result, villagers complain that they are confused on the panchayat union they need to approach to get their grievances redressed. “When we go to one panchayat union for redressal of grievances, we are asked to go to the other civic body resulting in waste of time and effort for us,” lamented Kubendran, a resident of Nadupattu village. On different assembly constituencies, “Residents of one street in the village come under Polur assembly constituency while residents of the next street are attached to the Arni assembly constituency,” lamented Kumaresan, another resident. Even during the delimitation exercise, this issue was somehow overlooked, officials admit.
