Following several complaints that the new syllabus especially for high school students is tough, the State government has decided to launch a crash coaching programme for government teachers, which will enable them to handle the curriculum well in the classroom.

Accordingly, the training programme for teachers handling Classes 10 and 12 will start from June 11. They will be given special coaching in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Commerce, Economics and Accountancy. About 50 teachers per subject for each class have already been identified and they will be trained by a resource person.

Recently, School Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan launched new textbooks for Class 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10 and 12. Last year, the government had released new syllabus books for Class 1, 6, 9 and 11.

A senior official from School Education Department told DT Next that the training will go on for a week. “It may be extended to ten days depending upon the portions covered,” he added. He also said that the identified teachers will be coached in the government resource centres, established in all the districts.

According to the official, they also will be given a handbook on each subject, which is a compiled version of the textbooks. The official said that the government would also provide training for those taking classes for standard 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8. “The date and time of the training will be announced shortly,” he added.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Teachers’ Association said that the training should be spread out in phases to ensure that the schools don’t fall short of teachers.

Association State President P K Illamaran pointed out that the training could be provided on weekends so that teachers will not miss the classes. The association is planning to give a representation to the government urging the authorities to train the teachers batch-wise.
