With mercury levels high in Perambalur and the adjacent districts, the rains on Thursday night caught people by surprise, but continued till Friday in various places, including Veppanthattai, Malaiyalapatti, Eraiyur, Valikandapuram, Venbavoor, Palaiyur and Arumbavur villages.

At Veppanthattai, many trees were uprooted and banana plantations were severely damaged from the strong winds.

With electric poles also falling off in many places, the power supply was cut off in various parts of the district. Signal poles at the new bus stand in Perambalur also leaned low in the winds.

Saravanan, a farmer from Malayalapatti who lost three acres of areca nut plantation in the rain, said, “No trees withstood the rains after the strong winds on Thursday night. More than 700 trees grown over the past seven years were damaged. The officials should enumerate the loss and initiate steps to provide compensation,” he said.

Similarly, farmers from Palaiyur lost their banana plantation. They appealed that the government look into the loss and support with appropriate compensation.
