According to sources, Krishnamurthy (53), a merchant, had organised a head tonsure function for his grandchildren, one-month-old Sushanth and 18-month-old Joswin on May 15. Krishnamurthy’s brother Sakthivel (50) and his family, who have been residing in Hyderabad, too attended the function.

On Friday, Krishnamurthy, along with his daughter Aruna, Sushanth, Joswin, brother-in-law Nagaraj (28), Sakthivel’s son Kishore (13), relatives Sivakumar (40) and Gomathy (45) visited the Samayapuram Mariamman temple when the incident took place.

En route to the temple, the car in which Krishnamurthy’s family was travelling collided with a van-transporting sewing machines from Chennai-near Mayanur on the Karur-Tiruchy National Highway. In the impact of the collision, both Sushanth and Joswin died on the spot, while others were trapped in the mangled remains of the car, sustaining severe injuries. Nagaraj was at the wheels of the car in which Krishnamurthy’s family was travelling at the time of the incident.

Passers-by, who noticed the incident, relayed the information to the Mayanur police and also alerted the 108-ambulance service.

Upon receiving information, police personnel rushed to the spot and rescued the trapped people. The injured were then sent to the Karur Government Hospital.

Krishnamurthy, Aruna, Nagaraj and Kishore, however, died on the way to hospital.

Sivakumar and Gomathy were admitted in the hospital and are presently undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit.

The bodies of the deceased were handed over to the relatives after a post-mortem examination.

The Mayanur police have registered a case and are searching for the van driver who fled the spot after the incident.
