Minister of School Education, Sengottayan performed religious rituals at the Palani Murugan temple earlier today. Following his visit to the temple, the minister appeared for an interview with reporters. During the interview, he mentioned that 14 amenities including bicycles, laptops and school bags are currently being provided to students enrolled in government schools.
“Tamil Nadu is a forerunner for education in the country. This can be attributed to the various changes that have been employed in the sector”, he said.
He said that laptops totalling at 28 lakhs have been allocated for students this year. Since 37 lakh students have already received laptops, the number will reach 65 lakhs in 6 years.
He also mentioned that Tamil Nadu’s higher education percentile of 48.9% has surpassed the country higher education goal of 25.6%. He attributes this to the incentives given to the students by the department of education in the state. He confirmed the launch of a new scheme implementing smart classes with internet facilities for classes 9, 10 and 11 while the same has already been implemented for around 7,000 classrooms of 6, 7 and 8th grades.
“Due to the difficulties faced by portable libraries, a new scheme facilitating students to access books from their laptops through e-libraries has been introduced. Following the end of examinations, a new channel for the department of education will be introduced. Modern learning techniques like robotics will be implemented. Around 7 thousand jobs will be created. Steps to bring in both Tamil and English medium of education in government schools have been taken up”, he adds.
