Coastal Security Wing functioning with just one ADGP

Though the Tamil Nadu police have said that the coastal security has been beefed up following the Colombo serial blasts, lack of officers at disposal on Sunday was an issue of concern for the Coastal Security Wing, the unit that is responsible for guarding porous coast line of more than 1,000 km.

Except the additional director general of police K Vanniya Perumal, who is heading the wing, no other high-ranking officials in the wing was available on Sunday at their office.

Currently there is no inspector general of police for the wing. One DIG, who is posted in the wing is out of the state on election duty. There are two superintendents of police in the wing. While one SP is again on election duty, while the second SP was on leave on Sunday.

It was left to the ADGP, who was in the office on Sunday, to co-ordinate work with wing’s intelligence unit and those deployed in the coastal area after serial blasts rocked Colombo.

“It was common to police officers to take election related assignment in other states during election time. May be nobody expected this kind of development in the neighbouring island country and that is why officers were given permission to take up election related works in other states,” noted a senior official from the state headquarters.

However, it may be noted that the coastal security wing’s intelligence cell which was formed a year back has been functioning as the last line of marine defence when it comes to protecting the TN coast line. The separate intelligence unit for Coastal Security Group, has been working in tandem with other TN security agencies along with Navy and Coast Guard.
