Man kills wife for refusing money for liquor, ends life
A day after he allegedly set his wife on fire for refusing to give him money to buy liquor, a 40-year-old man committed suicide in Pernambut on Saturday.
Vellore
Police said Madhivanan, a resident of Gudiyattam, was married to Kanimozhi (37) for more than twenty years. An unemployed Madhivanan would regularly demand money from his wife, who worked as a weaver, to consume liquor. This resulted in frequent arguments between the couple.
On Friday afternoon, Madhivanan became agitated after Kanimozhi refused to give him money. He then locked the house door from inside, doused his wife with kerosene and set her on fire. On hearing Kanimozhi’s screams, neighbours rushed to the house and tried to open the door. After a few minutes, Madhivanan opened the door and fled the spot. Kanimozhi was taken to the Vellore Government Medical College Hospital, where she succumbed later in the night.
Meanwhile, passers-by alerted the police about a body hanging from a tree in a cremation ground near Pernambut. Upon inquiries, the cops identified thedeceased as Madhivanan.
