ECI should have disqualified Kathir, says Jayakumar
State Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar on Wednesday criticised the Election Commission of India (ECI) for cancelling the LS polls in Vellore constituency saying that the election body should have instead disqualified the DMK candidate, who was allegedly linked to the massive seizure of cash kept for distribution to voters.

Addressing newspersons, Jayakumar said, “The ECI should have disqualified Kathir Anand if the cash was seized from his house. By countermanding the election, it has done injustice to other candidates.”
The ECI made its announcement to cancel the polls in Vellore on Tuesday after a large amount of cash was also seized from the house of a contractor. The announcement evoked widespread condemnations from various sections belonging to different walks of life in the state.
Jayakumar said that the ECI should have investigated the source of the seized money. “It should probe vital aspects such as from which bank the cash was drawn. After conducting investigations, the EC should have rejected the candidature of the person linked to the cash,” the Minister added.
Stating that the AIADMK alliance had a bright chance of winning in Vellore, he alleged that the DMK distributed money to voters to influence the outcome.
“The DMK, which does not believe in democracy, wants to murder democracy by giving money to voters. The AIADMK, on the other hand, is facing the elections by trusting the electorate,” said Jayakumar.
Blaming the DMK for the violence in Karur, the senior AIADMK leader said, “They are involved in hooliganism and have gone to the extent of even threatening Karur collector, who is also the Returning Officer. Stringent action must be taken against the DMK functionaries who were involved in the incident.”
