The School Education Department move came after hundreds of students found it difficult to write the Class 10 board examinations this year as they studied in schools functioning without the permission of the government.

Accordingly, allgovernment aided schools, private institutions, CBSE schools, Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) schools, International Baccalaureate (IB) schools and International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) should get the recognition certificate from the State government.

A senior official from the Education Department said there are about 5,000 schools functioning without required permission from Directorate of Town and Country Planning (DTCP) or Local Planning Authority (LPA) or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA).

In addition, high and higher secondary schools should a recognition certificate to send their students to attend board exams.

“Strict instructions have been issued to the district education authorities to prepare the list of unrecognised schools and send it to the Directorate ofSchool Education before May,” the official said. They have also been instructed to prepare the list of students who are studying inrecognised schools, the official added.

He said once the list of unrecognised schools is prepared, the officials would advertise to create awareness among the parents not to admit their children in those schools.

“In addition, notices would also be pasted at important places regarding the unrecognised schools in that particular area,” he said. The official said the Transport Department official would also withdraw the fitness certificates to vehicles belonging to schools that are unrecognised.

He also pointed out that all the schools that are unrecognised would be instructed either to close or to get at least the temporary recognition immediately from the government.
