State notifies issue of trade licences for beauty parlours, spas

Justice K Ravichandrababu offered the above direction based on the submission by the State that a notification dated February 27, 2019 has been issued under Section 373 of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act 1919, wherein beauty parlours, spas and massage parlours have been included in Schedule-VI for obtaining trade license to be issued by the Greater Chennai Corporation.

It was also submitted that similar notifications have been issued for all the Municipalities and Corporations in the State.

The submission was in sequel to a batch of writ petitions moved by those running beauty parlours, spas and massage parlours in Erode seeking to forebear the police from interfering with their peaceful conduct of business under the guise of inspection.

They had contended that they are carrying on their business lawfully without doing any illegal or unlawful activities and therefore unwarranted interference by the police must be stopped.

Also, on noting that the petitioners can apply for such licenses before the competent authorities within June 30 by complying with all the requirements, Justice Ravichandrababu directed the police to maintain status quo.

However, if the concerned authorities receive complaint about any legal or unlawful activities allegedly being carried on in those places, the order of status quo granted herein will not be a bar for such authorities to act against those erring persons in accordance with law.
