HC: Assessment for clinical labs must

Observing that 80 per cent of the clinical laboratories in Tamil Nadu have no certification either from ISO (International Organization for Standardization) or from National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), the Madras High Court has directed the State to take a positive decision to ensure that these labs compulsorily undergo the assessment procedure.

Based on a letter issued by the Quality Council of India to the Chief Secretary that interested labs are directed to submit applications and undergo third party assessment by NABLC, a division bench comprising Justice S Manikumar and Justice Subramonium Prasad said “It is the endeavor of this court that labs should at least have minimum quality assurance, for which purpose, it should not be restricted only to interested laboratories, to utilize the above said scheme.”

“The scheme should be made known to all the laboratories, which do not satisfy either ISO or NABL standards and they should compulsorily undergo the assessments procedure,” the bench added. The bench also impleaded the Quality Council of India as a respondent in the case to effectively adjudicate the issues raised in the writ petition.
