The victim was identified as Amutha. According to sources, neighbours knocked her door on Monday morning, but there was no response. When they managed to open the door, Amutha was found dead, hanging herself by a sari to a ceiling clamp, sources said.
In the last three months, police sources said, constable Amutha was posted at the all-women station in Usilampatti on deputation as ‘other duty’. The constable was already posted at Valandhur police station, sources added.
Police officials claimed that preliminary inquiries ruled out any work related reason behind the suicide, adding that family dispute was believed to be the cause. However, Usilampatti police have filed a case under Section 174 CrPC (unnatural death) based on a complaint lodged by Muthuvalan, the husband of the deceased.
The body was taken to Usilampatti Government Hospital for post mortem examination, sources said.
