The garbage caught fire on Saturday night and spread quickly due to the heavy wind. After information, the fire and rescue personnel and Corporation staff rushed to the spot to put off fire. However, the fire continued to rage all night, when works got affected due to darkness. On Sunday, six fire tenders and Corporation vehicles were pressed into service to douse the fire.

After inspecting the dump yard, the Corporation Commissioner cum special officer J Sravan Kumar said to media that efforts are on to douse the fire completely.

“To prevent fires in future, it has been decided not to dump all the garbage at the same spot. Instead, they would be segregated and dumped as smaller mounds in a larger area. Also, sanitary inspectors and workers will monitor the dump yard round-the-clock to prevent miscreants setting fire to garbage,” he said.

The official also said that apart from the eight fire tender vehicles involved in dousing fire, five additional lorries and two earth movers were also being used.
