Sources said the gold, which was stored in 45 boxes, was transported in a van without proper documents.

When contacted, Madurai Collector and District Election Officer S Natarajan said the jewellery was handed over to Income Tax officials, who would decide on further action.

The flying squad officials were pressed into action for the second consecutive day, following the seizure of gold ornaments worth 3.64 crore near Melur in Madurai on Tuesday.

Sources said flying squad teams and static surveillance teams were being deputed to check vehicles round the clock to prevent any violation of poll code, including distribution of money and other valuables to attract voters.
