Reacting to the news reports, NCW chief Rekha Sharma has issued a notice to DGP, Tamil Nadu, T K Rajendran to take appropriate action against the accused.

"The commission is seriously concerned about the safety and security of the women in the state of Tamil Nadu," Sharma said in a letter.

"Considering the gravity of the matter, it is requested that appropriate action be taken as per the relevant provisions of law against all the accused and a detailed action taken report in the matter be sent to the commission," she added.

Meanwhile, the VCK and CPI(M) on Wednesday demanded the state government to form an investigation team monitored by Madras High Court for the Pollachi incident, in which several girls were gang raped.

Thirumavalavan, in a statement said, “State government shifting the case to CBCID kindles suspicion. A special investigation team should be appointed and the investigation by the team should be monitored by the High Court”.

The Pollachi incident where a gang threatened, raped and filmed large number of girls for several years created a widespread furore across the state. Civil Rights groups and political parties have demanded stringent action on the persons involved in the incident.

Thirumavalavan said that the gang had been involved in the crime for more than seven years and they have operated as a network. It would not be possible to operate the network without political backing and so Court-monitored special investigation should be carried out.

Thirumavalavan also said that similar to the idol theft case where the investigation is monitored by the High Court, the investigation in Pollachi incident should also be monitored by the Court.

DMDK treasurer Premalatha Vijayakant said that the politicians who are involved in the Pollachi incident should be arrested. “The politicians even if they are in the ruling party should be arrested and none who are involved in the incident should be spared," said Premalatha, while addressing the media at the Chennai airport.
