A source in the Secretariat said, “The woman was promised a government job by the State government when she was admitted at the hospital. Now, that promise has been fulfilled. She will now work at the State AIDS control society. Even though she did not receive formal education, the rules were relaxed for her.”

The incident occurred at Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) when the woman, who was five months pregnant at that time, was infused with HIV blood. The incident came to light after a similar incident was reported in Sattur, in Virudhunagar district, when a 23-year-old woman was infused with HIV blood.

The family of the Mangadu woman had filed a complaint with the Health Department, when during a blood test in her ninth month of pregnancy, it was found that she was HIV +. Though KMC management initially refuted charges, denying that they had not transfused HIV blood into her, State Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar, who had visited the hospital, had promised her a government job. After getting deducted with HIV, the State government ensured that she did not transmit the disease to her baby and put her on Anti-Retroviral Therapy. The surgery was performed in KMC and doctors were successful in preventing transmission of HIV to the child.
