Battery Torch is appropriate symbol for us, says Kamal Haasan
The Election Commission of India allocated ‘battery torch’ symbol for Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, on Sunday. Elated after the decision, Kamal Haasan thanked the poll body in a tweet.

“MNM thanks the Election Commission of India for granting us the ‘Battery Torch’ symbol for the forthcoming elections. So appropriate. MNM will endeavour to be the ‘torch-bearer’ for a new era in Tamil Nadu and Indian politics,” Kamal Haasan tweeted.
Meanwhile, he told the reporters that the interview to select suitable candidates for the elections would be conducted from March 11 to March 15. “We have received 1,137 applications and the candidates will be selected soon,” he added. When asked whether he would contest in the Lok Sabha elections, he unequivocally replied that he would contest and announce the constituency in a few days.
Explaining the party stand on banning liquor in the State, the actor-politician said that banning liquor with an order might not fructify in the state. “We have to create awareness among the public before banning the liquor. Prohibition should be brought into effect in a phased manner,” he said.
He also said the election manifesto of MNM is getting ready and it would include promises that could be implementable. Taking a dig at the BJP for commenting on MNM’s party symbol, Kamal said that NOTA symbol is the appropriate symbol for the saffron party.
He also added that he is expecting the support from his friend and colleague Rajinikanth for the elections. Kamal also has formed lawyers’ committee for each parliamentary constituency to help the MNM candidates to file nominations and help them to face fabricated cases filed by other party candidates.
