Youth gored to death, 2 bulls run over by train in Kallakudi

The annual jallikattu was organised at Kallakudi near Lalgudi on Friday in which as many as 717 bulls and 314 tamers from Tiruchy, Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Pudukkottai and Madurai took part. Tiruchy Superintendent of Police Ziaul Haque, Lalgudi RDO Balaji, among other officials attended the event.

When the event was on, one of the bulls suddenly gored M Manikandan (23) from Ananthimedu village near Lalgudi on his chest after which he fell down unconscious. Soon, the event was put off and he was rushed to Lalgudi GH. However, doctors pronounced him brought dead.

This apart, more than 25 tamers sustained injuries in the event. Among them, six persons, including Velmurugan (22) from Elanthaikudam in Ariyalur sustained severe injuries and they were rushed to Tiruchy GH. Their condition was said to be still critical. The jallikattu was suspended following the incident, said the organisers.

Meanwhile, two bulls owned by Velankanni from Thondamanthurai in Perambalur which ran amok from the arena crossed the railway track near the Kallakudi railway station and suddenly an express train bound from Tiruchy to Chennai ran over them. Both the bulls died on the spot. Velankanni, who was shocked to see the bulls, claimed that the bulls earned him several prizes across the state and won prizes in the Kallakudi jallikattu also. After collecting the prizes when he reached near the bulls along the track, he found them lying dead.
