According to the parents, the boy was earlier studying in a regular school in Tiruvalanchuzhi where he was reportedly made to sit alone. Following this, they shifted him to the National School for the Deaf, an institution for mentally challenged kids, functioning at Srinagar Colony in Kumbakonam.
They alleged that injury marks were found the shoulder of their son when he returned from school on Friday. “After inspecting the marks, we suspected that it might have been caused due to caning”, the parents said. When they contacted the school, a teacher rushed to the boy’s house and claimed that no one from the school beat him. The speech impaired boy could not confirm anything because of his disability.
However, when the boy returned from school on Tuesday, fresh marks of injuries were found on his shoulders and forehead upon. The boy was also seen crying when he got down the van. Following this, the boy was admitted to the government hospital, Kumbakonam, on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, the Kumbakonam West police registered a case and began investigations into the case. When contacted, Sathishkumar, correspondent of the school, denied the corporal punishment allegations levelled by the parents. He added that the boy might have been beaten up by other boys, who travelled with him in the private van, which ferried students of various schools. Further inquiries are on.
Despite several attempts, the parents of the boy could not be contacted for their comments.
