Tamil Nadu revamps engineering college fee panel
After a series of complaints from the students of various self-financing engineering colleges in the State, Tamil Nadu government has revamped the committee to inspect and inquire into the grievances on the increased collection of capitation fee and tuition fee than the prescribed amount.

Accordingly, the committee would have a tenure of two years and would be headed by additional director in the Directorate of Technical Education. The committee would verify 20 major expenditure statements including salaries and allowances in all self-financing colleges.
A senior official from the Directorate of Technical Education told DT Next that the committee would invite the representatives of the consortium and association to discuss about the comprehensive fee for the students studying in various colleges located in rural and urban areas.
Stating that all the managements would be explained that the fee fixed by the committee is the maximum amount to be charged, he said, “It is open to the institutions to charge lesser fee than the amount fixed by the committee.”
The official also said, the management of the self-financing engineering colleges would now have the option to seek revision of fee fixed, by showing relevant records.
“Any deviation from the order of this committee will entail serious penal consequences like withdrawal of approval by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and disaffiliation by the concerned university as well of imposition of fine,” the official said.
Stating that unlike earlier conventional method, now any student as individual and parent has the liberty to approach the committee for action on overcharging of the fee, the official said and added that the identity of the complainant would be guarded.
He said that officers from the committee would conduct periodical inspection even during normal working hours of any educational institution to get the required information.
“The institutions will be instructed for immediate submission when vouchers relating to various items of receipts and expenditure is generated,” he said adding, “to give more security, all the records that are submitted by the institutions will be digitized for future verification.”
