Friend steals bike fitted with GPS, held within three hours

The bike belonged to Pushparaj, a resident of Ayanavaram, working in Chennai Metro Rail as a contract labour. Pushparaj recently bought a two-wheeler. Only after the police nabbed the suspect Megasurya (19), Pushparaj became came to know that it was his classmate who stole the bike. Both of them studied together till Class 9. After tracing the bike with help of the GPS tracker, the police personnel chased them in an autorickshaw. Megasurya and his associate Vinoth Kumar (19) were arrested around 7 am on Sunday, said the police.

Around 4 am on Sunday, when Secretariat Colony inspector E Rajeswari was on duty near Nammalvar Pettai, complainant Pushparaj approached her claiming that his motorbike worth Rs 1.5 lakh, parked in front of his house, was stolen. He also told the police that he has fixed a GPS tracker in the vehicle at the cost of Rs 1,500.

Sub-inspector Shanmugasundaram and constable Prabhu along with Pushparaj chased the bike in an autorickshaw. However, the bike was already in Tiruvanmiyur and moving towards Mahabalipuram. The bike had stopped at places like Neelankarai and Vengambakkam along the ECR, said the police. By the time autorickshaw managed to catch up with the two-wheeler, they had reached Koovathur. Noticing that the motorbike had stopped near the Koovathur bus stand, the SI got down few meters before the spot while the constable got down ahead of the location, while Pushparaj was in the autorickshaw. Only after securing the bike, Pushparaj noticed that his classmate Megasurya had stolen his bike.
