The tailoring shop is the latest addition in the prison, joining the already functional in-house bakery, restaurant and sweet stall.
“Public can walk in with their own bit clothes and get their dress stitched for a low price,” said A Thirumurugan, Office Superintendent, central prison, Tiruchy.
“Over 60 inmates have been trained in tailoring at the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) inside the prison,” said G Shanmugam Sundaram, DIG of Prisons, Tiruchy Range, who along with C Murugesan, Superintendent of Prison, inaugurated the tailoring shop.
“Stitching charges have skyrocketed everywhere, forcing many to opt for ready-made dresses. We hope to change that trend by offering the service for a reasonable price,” the DIG said.
According to the price list, provided by prison officials, tailoring charges for a shirt (for adult) would be Rs 175 for full sleeve, Rs 125 for half sleeve, Rs 200 for trousers. Salwar and blouse would be stitched for Rs 150 and Rs 80 respectively. Children will be offered considerable discounts.
According to Thirumurugan, “Apart from the government’s assistance, several NGOs are showing support and have sponsored tailoring machines.”
Murugesan said there are plans to open a salon within the premises. “There are many hair dressing experts in the prison. They would be soon roped in to run the salon,” he added.
