Smart driving licences, RCs issued in Vellore

As a token measure, Collector SA Raman issued the new chip-embedded smart cards to two beneficiaries. Vellore RTO G Ramkrishnan said, “The chip-embedded RC smarts cards is a new concept while smart driving licences are already in vogue. However, it is only now that the smart cards are being issued.” “The new chip-embedded cards will be provided for people who apply for driving licence and RC. However, those possessing the old RC books can also convert their card into a smart card by paying a fee of Rs 200, after which their old RC will be cancelled and they will be issued with the new smart RC cards,” he added.

The old RC books would be valid till a smart RC is issued. The Smart RC would be issued during the renewal process. “More than 12 lakh people under the three RTO offices will be covered under the scheme,” said G Ramkrishnan.
