The banyan tree was one among the many damaged trees in Aranthangi region in Pudukkottai district–it was standing tall at a Perumal temple near the Panchayat Union Primary School in Karisakadu village before it was uprooted by Cyclone Gaja.Â
Since the tree was home to hundreds of birds before the damage, the villagers took various measures to re-plant it, but they failed as the tree had dried away. However, after their efforts were in vain, a group of youngsters from the village approached environmentalists and experts of tree plantation to get inputs to succeed on the same.
From their suggestions, the youth, on Monday, placed wet gunny bags in all the chopped branches and applied organic manure. They then dug a huge pit in the same place, lifted the fallen tree with JCBs and replanted it in the pit.Â
Now, people can witness the fresh leaves springing out from the replanted tree. The local youth and school children are regularly watering it as well.
