Fisheries university to introduce four new courses in coming year
The Tamil Nadu Dr J Jayalalithaa Fisheries University (TNJFU), Nagapattinam, will introduce four new courses, namely BTech (Nautical Science), BTech (EEE) and two Bachelor of Vocation (BVoc) programmes in intensive fishing technology and intensive aquaculture technology in the coming academic year.

Addressing the gathering during the fifth convocation ceremony on Friday, University Vice-Chancellor S Felix said the new courses will commence with the government’s approval.
“We are determined to impart quality education, an aspect which is reflected in the achievements of the students. Our students have been consistently performing well in the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) examination conducted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) every year.”
Two of the university’s students figured in the top ten positions. In addition, three others were ranked among the top ten performers in the annualall-India level Professional Fisheries Graduates Forum awards examination.
“The university introduced an innovative scheme last year. Six students who topped the university examinations were sent to Vietnam last year for a month’s stay. They visited fish farms, hatcheries, processing factories, markets and educational institutes. We intend to continue with this initiative as it has ensured a competitive spirit among the students,” Felix said, adding that the university undertook 38 projects with a budget of Rs 60 crore funded by various agencies.
“International students from Iran, Bhutan and Tanzania are pursing their higher education at TNJFU. The university has filled up 30 teaching and 30 non-teaching posts this year.”
The Vice-Chancellor also thanked the State government for sanctioning 88 new positions, comprising 34 teaching and 54 non-teaching posts, recently. Dr K Gopal, Principal Secretary to the Government, Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries, announced four new endowment awards, in addition to the existing 37 awards for academic excellence in fisheries science.
The university has 8 colleges, 5 directorates, 40 research and extension units, 1 KVK and 3 para-professional colleges. The unitary university has a strength of around 200 faculty members and 900 students.
