He said that the presence of a large number of participants at the event was indicative of the enthusiasm and the sense of togetherness that sports have been able to generate.
“Sports help children to develop mental and physical toughness and hones their motor and cognitive skills. Participation in sports teaches teamwork, cooperation, desire to work towards objectives and the ability to handle defeats and disappointments with equanimity,” he said while addressing the gathering at the meet organised by theMadras West Round Table 10(MWR10), Madras Ladies Circle and Special Olympics Bharat.
Applauding the efforts of the organisers, he said, “Such events indicate that disability need not be anobstacle to success as is evident from the lives of astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and Paralympics gold medalist Mariyappan Thangavelu.”
The athletes who will be travelling to Abu Dhabi for the WorldSummer Games of the Special Olympics in March 2019 — who were present at the meet — received the Governor’s best wishes as well.
