The arrested were Kalanandan, Murali (44) and Vijayan (55), all of them residents of Kosavanpudur. All of them have been remanded to custody.
Police inquiries revealed that Gharpalia was proceeding to Bengaluru with two of his companions for work. But, the trio by mistake alighted at Katpadi station.Â
Later an argument broke out between the three after which, Gharpalia separated and reached Kosavanpudur village around midnight on Monday, Gharpalia, who walked clueless, later landed at Kalanandan’s (60) house at Kosavanpudur.
Kalanandan, a farmer, mistook him for a thief, and alerted his neighbours. Residents who reached Kalanandan’s house caught Gharpalia, tied him to a tree and thrashed. Unable to withstand the assault, Gharpalia succumbed to injuries on the spot. Later, residents disposed his body into a dry well nearby.
Upon investigation, the police found that the locals were irked with constant incidents of robbery, mostly involving north Indian men. Further, in several cases culprits caught and handed over to the police were released a few days later.
Police during prelimimary investigation managed to find out the identity of the victim as Gunanjan Gharpalia (36) from Sivasagar in Assam with the help of an Aadhar card found in the pocket of his trouser.
