Ajith Raj, a second-year student of Raja Doraisingam Government Arts College, was attacked with knife by three other students, two of whom were in their final year.

Sources ruled out any communal motive behind the incident since the assailants, including Mahadevan, who led the attack, and Ajith Raj belonged to the same caste. A petty dispute over whose residential area was dominant may have led to the attack. While the injured victim was a resident of Pillur, Mahadevan hailed from Avarangadu.

The incident took place around 10.30 am, when Ajith Raj was sitting under a tree. On seeing Mahadevan and his two accomplices, identified as Sathish and Rajamani, Ajith Raj started running. Subsequently, he was chased down and attacked. The victim sustained severe cut injuries on different parts of his body, including head, shoulder and cheek.

Initially treated at the Sivaganga Government Medical College Hospital, Ajith Raj was later referred to the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital. In the wake of the brutal incident, college authorities declared a holiday for students.

Based on a complaint lodged by Panneerselvam, a second-year student of the college, Sivagangai Town police have registered a case against the three accused persons under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC.

When contacted, Sivaganga Superintendent of Police, T Jayachandran, said there was an altercation between the victim and Mahadevan a couple of days ago over an issue which took place during a Kabbadi tournament held recently.

“The investigating team has secured a CCTV footage of the incident. The accused individuals would soon be nabbed,” he said.
