While addressing the media, Srinivasan said, “Experts from the Forest department who are from Indian Forest Service thought that it would be good for Chinnathambi to return to forest and join its clan.
But, if there is opposition, Forest department will definitely reconsider the option of converting it into a kumki.” Recently, the wild elephant named Chinnathambi entered human habitat near Pollachi and Udumalpet areas resulting in panic among the residents and Forest department officials. However, it remains uncaptured till date. Meanwhile, officials from the Forest department informed the media that to prevent any conflict between people and Chinnathambi, there was no other option but to convert the jumbo into a kumki.
The plan of the Forest department created furore among the animal lovers and activists as they opposed the decision of Forest department. When questioned about the continuous incidents of elephants entering human habitats, he replied, “There were 101 elephant corridors across the state, but they were all encroached. With the help of Revenue department, we are removing the encroachments in the elephant corridors.”
