Forced to confess, says Nirmala Devi
“My confession statement was not true and I was threatened to give such a version,” Nirmala Devi, former assistant professor of a private college in Aruppukottai, Virudhunagar district, who faces charges of alluring students to extend favours for marks told reporters while being taken to the Srivilliputhur Fast Track Mahila Court on Wednesday.

Pasumpon Pandian, the counsel of the former assistant professor, told reporters that Nirmala Devi had been languishing in jail for the last ten months.
Even after the assistant professor submitted petitions to meet her relatives and friends during her incarceration, she was denied permission the counsel said, adding, “It is blatant violation of prison rules violation. The case is being treated as sexual abuse because of which my client is badly affected.”
On many occasions bail was rejected even after repeated petitions. “The legal body might have granted bail to Nirmala, but the due to the alleged intervention of some senior officials, Nirmala Devi was being denied the relief. “Such incidents indicate lead to apprehensions of a that political conspiracy in the case,” Pandian claimed.
He expressed the hope that Nirmala would get bail within a month.
Later, Nirmala Devi was produced before the Srivilliputhur Fast Track Mahila Court Judge Leyahath Ali and the case was put off to February 14.
It may be recalled that Nirmala Devi was arrested on April 16, 2017 after an audio clip that went viral on the social media, in which she allegedly allured some girl students to extend sexual favours to senior officials of Madurai Kamaraj University, to which the college is affiliated.
Initially, Aruppukottai town police filed a case in connection with the incident. Later, the case was shifted to CB-CID for probe. Two other persons including V Murugan, assistant professor and S Karuppasamy, research scholar were arrested in connecting with the incident and facing the case.
