Madurai div recorded 94.3 pc punctuality rate, claims DRM
The punctuality and performance of Southern Railway’s Madurai Division has increased to 94.3 from 91.8 percent recorded in the previous year despite increased traffic blocks for maintenance purposes.

Addressing the gathering during the Republic Day celebrations on Saturday, Neenu Ittyerah, Divisional Railway Manager, said the Madurai division has continued to be one of the top performers in terms of passenger traffic recording a 17.3 per cent growth in passenger traffic and 13.8 per cent rise in passenger earnings compared to the previous year.
In a major development, the division has got sanction for a new bridge at Pamban, spanning around 2.05 km at an estimated cost of Rs 250 crore. Sanction has also been received to revive the railway line to Dhanuskodi, a project which is estimated to cost Rs 208 crore, she said.
According top priority to safety, she said the division has eliminated all residual 113 unmanned level crossing gates between April and September 2018 through creation of subways, through manning and diversion.
The division has also fast tracked its goal of setting up catering stalls at more stations. As many as 20 new catering stalls have been set up at 13 stations and tenders are being floated for another 51 stalls at 37 stations. Currently only 13 stations have got ATM machines. It would be increased to 51 stations, Neenu Ittyerah said. Lifts would be installed at Tirunelveli junction within the next two months, with 16 more stations scheduled to get the facility in the next financial year, the DRM said.
As part of project ‘Utkrisht’, the division would upgrade coaches of the pearl city express train.
In response to the directive of Railway Ministry in August 2018 to upgrade Madurai Junction, the division has undertaken upgradation of the station as well as the one at Rameswaram. This workis targeted to be completedin February this year, the DRM said.
