Girivalam path surveyed for bailey bridge
To facilitate the construction of a bailey bridge to ease both vehicular and pedestrian congestion, the works of surveying the girivalam path inside the Tiruvannamalai temple started with the help of a helicam on Tuesday.
Tiruvannamalai
The district administration mooted the idea of laying a bailey bridge even before the Deepam last year and selected two sites for this purpose. However, the junction of major streets, Mada street, Big Street, China Kadai Street near the Boothanarayanan temple was unsuitable and hence the bridge was decided to be constructed at the junction of Chinnappa Naicker Street and Neelakandar Streets.
In the survey, a helicam was used to demarcate the area since, the location sees the most congestion with both vehicular and pedestrian traffic during the Deepam.
The construction of the bailey bridge is estimated at Rs 1.50 crore and it is noted that the bailey bridges are used in the army to cross the rivers. The bridge can be erected in 10 hours and can be dismantled in a lesser time frame. Once completed, two wheelers and cars would be allowed to commute in the stretch while pilgrims can circumambulate in the girivalam without disturbance.
According to officials, the private agency tasked with the work of surveying would soon provide a report based on which further action would be taken.
