Chennai
The Madras High Court on Monday ordered the central government to file a response on their passing of bill to reserve 10% for economically weaker section in the General Category.
The petition filed by DMK president MK Stalin, sought the quashing of the bill saying that the economic criterion cannot be the sole basis for reservation.
The Parliament on January 9 approved amending the Constitution to provide 10% reservation to general category poor in jobs and education with the government terming the landmark move as 'slog over sixes'.
After the President signed the bill, it has become a law that will give economically weaker sections in the general category 10 per cent reservation in education as well as central and state government jobs.
