The school students today face an information glut, which they neither knew nor were they able to interpret or harness, said Mangala Sunder Krishnan, a chemistry professor at Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M), during the inaugural event.

Calling on students to understand that the learning experience was more valuable than winning a prize, the professor said that they should be receptive to new ideas and have a global vision aimed at helping people in all walks of life.

Stating that today’s world is highly competitive when compared to a quarter century ago, the professor said that students must inculcate a spirit for learning that would help them face challenges as they move onwards in life.

Presiding vice chancellor (VC) Anand Samuel called on the students to develop a mindset that would accept the present without forgetting the past.

Stating that the students participating in the two-day event were from the five southern states of the country, the vice chancellor said that prizes would be accorded for working models, idea presentation, poster presentation and a quiz.

Earlier, A Mary Saral from the School of Advanced Sciences (SAS) welcomed the gathering in the presence of the organising secretary N Arunai Nambi Raj and event manager E James Jebaseelan Samuel.
