World famous Alanganallur Jallikattu started at 8 a.m. on Thursday, with thousands of people from all over the world witnessing the event.
All protective measures have been taken by state government to conduct Jallikattu. Youngsters participating in the sport have undergone various tests including dope test. The participants should not be over 40 years of age, minimum of 150 cm height and 55 kg of weight or over and above.
Revenue Minister Uthayakumar led the Jallikattu participants to take oath. Following this, the Minister and the District Collector Natarajan started the event with green flag. Temple bulls were first untied from vadivasal following other bulls. Around 1,400 bulls are made to participate with 800 men to tackle them.
Madurai Collector S Natarajan, who had earlier inspected the arrangements, said jallikattu would normally be conducted for a period of seven hours from 8 am. “But catering to the demands of bull tamers, the time has been extended by one hour. Thus, the event would commence as per the regular schedule at 8 am and conclude at 4 pm this year,” he said on Saturday.
