    No computers for 42 Per cent of rural TN school kids

    At least 9.7 per cent of all schools in rural Tamil Nadu do not have drinking water facility, revealed a report by ASER Centre, an NGO, on education in rural TN on Wednesday.

    Another 10.1 per cent of schools have drinking water facility but no water, the report said.


    While merely 0.8 per cent of schools did not have toilets on their campus, at least 9 per cent of schools surveyed by the ASER team, had toilets but they were not in an usable condition. Besides, 3.9 per cent of schools had no separate provision for girls’ toilets, according to the report.


    The statistics put out by ASER indicated that 16.2 per cent of schools did not have any library facilities, and no computers were available for children to use in a whopping 42.1 per cent of all rural (both government and private) schools.


    Despite the State government’s insistence on inclusive education, a total of 14.9 per cent of schools in rural parts of the State do not have accessible playgrounds and 29.1 per cent of schools did not have any physical education teacher, according to the report. However, showing an upward trend on parent participation, school management committees were up and running in 95.1 per cent of the schools in the State.
