Avaniyapuram fails to attract outstation bulls

Sources from the Health Department of the Madurai Corporation said nine tamers suffered major injuries in the Avaniyapuram event, while 59 minor injury cases were reported. Those who sustained major injuries were admitted in the GRH. Of them, six were later discharged, a source added.

Meanwhile in Palamedu on Wednesday, a team of veterinarians examined whether the bulls that were to participate in the jallikattu were intoxicated, the animals’ teeth to determine their age, their horns and skin or other diseases before they were allowed in the event.

Deputy Director of Health KV Arjun later confirmed that 13 tamers suffered major injuries in the Palamedu jallikattu, while 32 others sustained minor injuries. Those with major injuries were admitted in the Government Rajaji Hospital, he said.

Many locals and tamers were, meanwhile, not happy with the way the jallikattu was organised this year.

Due to the intervention of the legal body, which organised the event this year as per the directive of the High Court, big prizes could not be sponsored by companies and leading organisations. However, unlike previous years, a separate bank account was opened for sponsors to deposit money for the prizes.
