The police said that Periasamy (50), a contractor from Erode, boarded an AC coach of the Yercaud Express and was carrying Rs 10 lakh to make payment to a supplier in Chennai. Sometime after the train started moving, he fell asleep. Upon reaching Chennai, he noticed that his suitcase with Rs 10 lakh was missing and lodged a complaint with the railway police at the Chennai Central.

During investigation, the Jolarpet police received information that a suitcase was handed over to the officials at Pachakuppam railway station, approximately 10 km from Ambur, around 11 am. Periasamy confirmed that it was his suitcase. But the cash was missing from the suitcase. Following this, the railway police at Chennai Central transferred the case to the Jolarpet police as the robbery is understood to have taken place in that limit.

Police suspect that the culprits might have travelled in the same compartment posing as passengers and must have robbed the cash at Jolarpet. A case has been registered and investigation is under way.
