    The state government has been in talks with the Centre to extend distribution of free laptops to students studying in Classes 9 and 10, said School Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan.

    Speaking to reporters, after giving Pongal gifts to people in Erode district on Sunday, the Minister said that free laptops will be given once the Union government gives its nod.

    “For students studying in Classes 11 and 12 and those who have passed out will be given laptops by this month end,” he added.

    Stating that LKG and UKG classes will commence in government schools from January 21, the Minister said that efforts have been taken to increase the student’s admission in government schools.

    The process to select teachers for the kindergarten classes have started and the schools have been asked to name teachers to handle the kindergarten classes.

    He also said that a new television channel will be started by the government to telecast content related to education. Spoken English classes will be conducted for students to improve their English fluency, he added.
