A division bench comprising Justice Vineet Kothari and Justice Anita Sumanth before whom a public interest litigation alleging pig menace came up on Monday, expressed surprise that despite no license being issued for breeding pigs in Padapai, the area was filled with pigs and no action has been taken by the authorities. The bench then accorded four weeks to file an action taken report on the issue.

Additional Advocate General Naramada Sampath appearing for the State informed the court that the lack of civic sense on the part of the residents was a major contribution factor to the menace. However, the bench on noting that when the authorities are armed with rules to prosecute the offenders, be it the residents or those rearing the pigs, wondered as to what stopped the authorities from acting against them. Based on directions issued during the previous hearing, the Director, Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine and the Block Development Officer, Padapai were present in court.
